Oak plantation

The oak plantation is an important step because, as for all trees, it conditions the good recovery and growth of the oak over the seasons.

Prefer a isolated place because the oak can take up a lot of space, sometimes several tens of meters in diameter and much more in height ...

  • The oak needs sun during the day, in the shade it could remain puny
  • Water well the first year after planting
  • Observe the instructions of planting and favor a cool soil.

Oak size

There is no pruning necessary in oak, except to eliminate after a few years the low branches to breast height.

Oak can also be pruned, preferably in winter but outside of frost.

Finally, we remove dead, fragile or diseased branches as they appear.

Oak acorn

The fruit of the oak is calledglans.

It often takes several years for the oak tree to start producing acorns. The production of acorns is also quite irregular from year to year.

The acorn harvest takes place in the fall, usually in September or October.

Acorns are the delight of squirrels, pigs, pigs and wild boars, but also many wild animals living in the forest.

Animals that feed on acorns are called balanophagus

To know about oak

The Oak is a name given to a large number of species and varieties of trees as well as shrubs belonging to the genus quercus.

Among the varieties of oak we find both the famous oak from our forests, as well as the quercus ilex where the quercus suber.

If some oaks have persistent foliage, the pedunculate oak that populates our forests is, for its part, obsolete.

The oak that is nicknamed "King of the forests" is remarkable for its wood, the beauty of its leaves and its majestic side, especially when it is large.

In the fall, its hues are flamboyant with its bright red, orange and yellow colors.

Avoid forest oak in your garden because its slow growth and the spectacular size it can reach could make you regret it ...

Oak diseases

Most oaks are resistant to disease and pests, but there are nonetheless some weaknesses in Quercus which deserve to be treated preventively or curatively.

  • Oak processionary caterpillars: The treatment is difficult for large oaks. There is also a treatment against oak processionary moth
  • The foliage is covered in white: This is surely thepowdery mildew
